plugin per stampante HP

Salve!
Credo di aver chiesto già in passato qualcosa di analogo, ma senza esito… ora riprovo, sperando di essere più ‘ferrato’.
La mia stampante HP-1018 abbisogna di un plugin proprietario per attivarsi. In versioni precedenti di Fedora, era sufficiente eseguire l’operazione una volta, mentre nella 20 bisogna farla ogni volta che si connette la stampante (purtroppo, anche se non capisco come mai – ma questo è un altro discorso).
Io lo faccio tramite HP Device Manager, che ha un’opzione apposita: cliccando, compare una finestrella in cui digitare la password di root e rispondere ad alcune semplici domandine.
Fra esse ce n’è una che potrebbe risolvere il problema, e cioè (vado a memoria, ma il succo è lo stesso): scaricare il plugin da internet o lanciarlo da una qualche sua archiviazione sul disco fisso.
Io scelgo immancabilmente la prima (e nel giro di qualche secondo la stampante si attiva, dato che fortunatamente sono collegato sempre a internet), ma mi chiedo: se il plugin (che ha il numero KP1Q2NG) viene ricuperato dalla rete, dovrà pur transitare dentro il mio PC e lasciare una copia di sé sul disco fisso, no? E se sapessi dove viene salvato, potrei evitare la prossima volta di ripetere tutta la procedura, digitando semplicemente quella posizione alla fatidica domanda di cui sopra.
Spero di esser stato chiaro sin qui.

Oggi ho provato a cercare nella macchina il plugin in questione, il “Trova file/cartelle” ci ha impiegato almeno un quarto d’ora, ma l’unica cosa che ci si avvicina che sono riuscito a trovare sembra essere un anodino “serial” di pochissimi bytes, nascosto in un posto impensabile e cioè /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:12.2/usb1/1-1/serial.
Perciò chiedo ai più esperti: c’è un altro modo di scovare questo file e salvarlo in una posizione tale che sia più comodo ricuperarlo quando serva?

Il plugin per la versione di hplip attualmente fornita da Fedora (3.13.11) puoi scaricarlo da http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/plugin/hplip-3.13.11-plugin.run (il file è unico per tutte le stampanti hp).
Ma se non ripeti l’installazione ogni volta la stampante non funziona ? Non è una cosa assolutamente normale … se è così c’è qualche anomalia nella tua configurazione da capire …

Procedo con ordine:

  1. per adesso ho scaricato e archiviato il file. Pare che funzioni, nonostante le apparenze: vedi punto successivo.

  2. come scrivevo, infatti nelle precedenti versioni di Fedora bastava scaricarlo la prima volta, poi la stampante funzionava regolarmente. Da quando ho installato la 20, la HP Laser Jet 1018 NON STAMPA NULLA finché non lancio HP Device Manager, clicco su Install Required Plugin, che avvia il sotto-programmino (in pratica, sarebbe a riga di comando se non per una rudimentale interfaccia grafica) che richiede la root password, si apre una finestrella Driver Plug-in Installation nella quale chiede dove trovare il file in questione, cioè se scaricarlo da internet o prenderlo in un certo punto del disco fisso.
    Poco fa ho scelto esattamente questa seconda opzione, dato che avevo appunto scaricato e archiviato il file hplip-3.13.11-plugin.run da te cortesemente segnalato.
    Di fatto è comparsa un’altra finestrella con la scritta: The download of the digital signature file failed. Without this file, it is not possible to authenticate and validate the plug-in prior to installation. Do you still want to install the plug-in? e i bottoni YES/NO. Ho cliccato sul primo, compare la finestrella successiva con il License Agreement da sottoscrivere [cliccando su I Agree e poi Next]) e nonostante il messaggio riottoso, dopo qualche secondo la stampante “gira”, cioè emette dei suoni che immagino significhino che sta ricevendo il file; poi compare la finestrella “Plug-in Installation Successful” e SOLAMENTE a questo punto si può procedere alla stampa e così ha sputato il foglio richiesto.
    Sono uscito da HP Device Manager e da Libre Office (era un file di testo di una sola pagina), ho spento la stampante, l’ho riaccesa dopo mezzo minuto, ho ricaricato il file di prima e ho provato a ristamparlo, senza cambiare nulla: la stampante è rimasta zitta e muta (ho provato sia dall’icona sulla barra superiore [Stampa direttamente il file - HP-LJ-1018] sia dal menu File > Stampa > OK).
    Così ho rifatto la stessa cosa: lanciato HP Device Manager e così via sino alla conferma di aver installato correttamente il plug-in (sempre dalla versione locale che ho scaricato stamattina, dopo aver letto il messaggio).

Beh, c’è EVIDENTEMENTE qualcosa che non va. Ma cosa? E soprattuto: come scoprirlo?

perché non hai installato hplip direttamente dai repo???

Francamente non mi ricordo, ma credo proprio di NON averlo installato a parte. Come faccio a controllare questo dettaglio (NB: è una domanda sincera, non ironica)?

@antoniom hplip è nei repo ma hplip-plugin (quello di cui si stava parlando) no, è software proprietario che va scaricato manualmente
o tramite hp-setup

potresti provare ad installare l’ultima versione 3.14.1 di hplip per vedere se la situazione migliora … esistono già i pacchetti in http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=489168
(in genere non è una buona idea installare i pacchetti da updates-candidate ma non dovrebbero esserci particolari problemi in questo caso, li ho installati anch’io sulla mia macchina dove ho una LaserJet e una MFP e entrambe
continuano a funzionare perfettamente)
Se decidi di fare questa prova devi aggiornare l’http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/plugin/hplip-3.14.1-plugin.run del plugin.

si, ma l’installazione è fatta da hp-setup che non so se è diverso da quello che hai usato tu…dove l’ho installato le stampanti (e gli scanner) funzionano perfettamente…

  2. hp-setup è il programma di cui parlavo, cioè quello con la grafica ‘spartana’ che si avvia cliccando su “Install Required Plugin”, solo che non lo sapevo…

immagino che tu intenda dire che io sostituisca TUTTI i pacchetti presenti nel sistema con quelli più aggiornati, non soltanto hplip, common, libs e gui, vero?

Esattamente, scarica tutti i pacchetti presenti per l’architettura della tua macchina, tranne hplip-debuginfo.

salve, stamattina mi è venuto in mente (avrei dovuto pensarci prima, però sempre meglio tardi che mai…) che forse dipende da un problema di diritti.
Nel senso che il mio utente NON ha l’autorizzazione di accedere direttamente alla stampante: come faccio a verificarlo ed eventualmente ad aggiungerlo?
Questo spiegherebbe perché invece stampa dopo aver scaricato (dando la password di superutente) il plugin proprietario, che invece l’utente normale non è autorizzato a installare.
Inoltre stamattina ho avuto improvvisamente necessità di stampare una pagina e per curiosità ho lanciato hp-setup: come utente normale non mi accettava e solo dopo aver messo la root passw, ha stampato senza bisogno di scaricare per l’ennesima volta il plugin, né da internet né dalla cartella nel disco fisso dove l’ho piazzato ieri. O forse non c’entra nulla?

Potrebbe essere un problema di permessi anche se la cosa è comunque strana, non c’è in genere bisogno di lavorare sui permessi dopo
un’installazione eseguita con hp-setup. (Che hp-setup ti chieda la password di root è normale, anche se la cosa fa infuriare lo stesso Torvalds.
l’installazione di una nuova periferica è un’operazione che richiede privilegi elevati su tutti i sistemi operativi)
Oltre a provare ad aggiornare hplip (che magari è sufficiente per risolvere il problema) puoi fare questa prova per capire
cosa impedisce al tuo utente di stampare:
apri (da root) il file /etc/cups/cupsd.conf, cerca questa riga:

LogLevel warn

e sostituiscila con quest’altra:

LogLevel debug

riavvia cups:

# systemctl restart cups

Ora lancia una stampa dal tuo utente, se l’operazione fallisce posta l’output di

# cat /var/log/cups/error_log

Prima di installare la nuova versione di hplip ho provato la procedura suggerita da Ito e, come c’era da aspettarsi, non stampa.
Un problema è che il file [quote]/var/log/cups/error_log[/quote] è molto lungo: non riesco a visualizzarlo tutto nel terminale, difatti salvandone l’output su file se ne genera uno di 722,2 kB, con dentro 8629 righi.
Forse potrei riportare solamente quelli preceduti da “E”, che credo stia per “error” (le altre iniziali presenti sono: I, D e W).

A questo aggiungo un altro particolare, forse però ininfluente per il problema on topic.
Quando si è aperta la finestrella per la stampa, nella quale ho selezionato una pagina a caso di un PDF che avevo sottomano, sono comparse due occorrenze di HP-LaserJet-1018, di cui solamente una con posizione “localhost.localdomain” e stato “Ready to print”. Immagino che sia quella di default e l’altra sia una installata per sbaglio quando armeggiavo con vari tentativi di risolvere il problema nei giorni scorsi.
Posso eliminarla (tanto non penso mi serva) lanciando hp-setup?

Iniziamo a vedere le ultime 200 righe, credo che siano più che sufficienti …

# tail -n 200 /var/log/cups/error_log | fpaste

e posta l’url che ti viene restituito.

Per eliminare la stampante errata, puoi usare la comoda interfaccia web di cups,
collegati http://localhost:631/printers/ e clicca sulla stampante da rimuovere.
Dopodiché dal menù a tendina scegli Amministrazione->Elimina la stampante

io eliminerei tutte le stampanti, stacca il cavo USB e riattaccalo…così dovrebbe riconoscerti la stampante nuovamente

Bella e pratica, non la conoscevo! Se non è troppo complicato, puoi spiegarmi come funziona (sull’url vedo una specie di indirizzo di una porta del PC, o sbaglio?).
Ho eliminato senza difficoltà il “doppione”; ma qual è la differenza rispetto a hp-setup?

Nelle righe che hai postato non sembra esserci nessun errore, neppure un warning … per cups sembrerebbe essere tutto a posto,
anche se di fatto dalla stampante non esce nulla.
In precedenza avevi scritto che c’erano parecchi errori … proviamo a vedere gli ultimi con:

# egrep '^(E|W)' /var/log/cups/error_log | tail -n 50

Facciamo anche quest’altro test…posta l’output completo di

$ rpmconf -a -d

per ogni file rintracciato dal comando ti verrà proposta una serie di azioni … tu dai semplicemente “Invio”, con
l’opzione -d siamo in modalità “dry-run” cioè di test e nessun operazione viene di fatto eseguita sui file
(se rpmconf non è presente installa con yum l’omonimo pacchetto)

Quella che ti ho fatto utilizzare prima è l’interfaccia web di cups da cui può gestire il demone di stampa,
aggiungendo, configurando ed eliminare le stampanti. hp-setup è un utility che fa tutto questo per te con
l’obiettivo di semplificare la vita all’utente.
Teoricamente potresti aggiungere direttamente la stampante anche da qui andando su Amministrazione->Aggiungi una stampante
ma per le stampanti hp è in genere sconsigliato …

scusa, prima non avevo visto il tuo messaggio.
Comunque non avrebbe funzionato: la stampante la collego solo quando mi serve, altrimenti viene spenta e scollegata (fisicamente) tutte le volte, e riposta su uno scaffale (non ho molto posto vicino al PC).

però magari in sé potrebbe essere un segnale rassicurante: dovrebbe significare che non ci sono doppioni nei pacchetti, vero?

rpmconf in parole povere serve a verificare che i file di configurazione siano aggiornati … da questo punto di vista la tua macchina
è perfetta, presumo tu abbia installato Fedora 20 ex-novo e non con fedup (cmq la cosa é irrilevante per la risoluzione del problema
di stampa, é solo una mia curiosità)
I warning relativi a stampanti che non possiedi puoi tranquillamente ignorarli, sono dei controlli che cups esegue sui driver presenti nel
sistema (dai un rpm -ql foomatic-db-ppds per rendertene conto)

Farei ora quest’altra prova:
collega la stampante al pc e accendila, dopodiché dai:

# hp-firmware -n

Se il comando non restituisce errori, prova a fare una stampa e vedi come si comporta
